Our organization is simple – volunteers earn points based on the number of hours they volunteer which can then be redeemed for rewards and discounts. With so many partners offering great rewards and discounts in the Volunteer Advantage Rewards Spot, volunteers get to use their points for things they need – or even better – things they want!
At The Volunteer Advantage, we believe that doing good is its own reward. However, based on our own volunteer experiences, we realized that circumstances might limit one's ability to volunteer and we wanted to find away around that roadblock. Here's our story...
In early 2008, we started to volunteer with Freedom Train Transports, a volunteers-based effort which rescues animals from high-kill shelters in the South and transports them to screened and approved rescue and forever homes in the Northeast. Because the trip is so long, the ride is usually divided into 100 mile segments. With sometimes up to 20 animals on each trip, often 2 or 3 drivers are needed for each leg. As we entered 2009, many volunteers were hit hard by the economic crisis and gas prices started to rise astronomically! It soon became very difficult for the group's founder to recruit volunteers. As we made one of our weekend runs, we started to brainstorm on ways we could help. What if we got a gas station to donate gas cards? What if we found a car wash willing to give a discount for transport drivers? (Putting 10 dogs in the back of our minivan often resulted in some messy situations!)
What if we could get a massage business to participate and provide drivers with a reduced price for a back massage? It was then that we realized that the idea would benefit not, one, not two, but three great groups. Volunteers would benefit from great rewards, non-profits would benefit by being able to recruit and retain their volunteers and businesses would benefit by getting their name out to more customers and would build their brand loyalty by being associated with great causes.
Based on those early conversations, we launched The Volunteer Advantage. Today, we are focused on creating a network of volunteers, nonprofits, community organizations and businesses who share our goal of developing creative approaches to making the world a better place.
