Helping Animals in Need: A Volunteer Resource

Animal Rescue month highlights volunteers working to rescue animals

While accurate recordkeeping is difficult to obtain, of the 1,000 shelters that replied to the 1997 National Counsel On Pet Population And Study, 4.3 million animals entered shelters, and roughly 64% were euthanized. The exact reason for these deaths may have been sickness, aggressive behavior, injury, or simply overcrowding. Estimates suggest that 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. Wild animals injured or affected by industrial pollution also make up a significant portion of animal deaths.

It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States. More facts
